Titus: A Comrade of the Cross

By Florence Morse Kingsley

In 1894, a publisher held a writing competition to obtain the best manuscript that would strengthen a child’s faith in Christ and love for Christ. Titus: A Comrade of the Cross was the result. This fictional recounting of the life of Christ was so popular that, after six weeks, another 200,000 copies were produced by the publisher. Titus powerfully shows the love, mercy, and compassion of Jesus for sinners. In this story, you will find sadness and sorrow, but you will also find the power of Jesus at work to “heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound” (Isaiah 61:1). The Life of Henry Martyn

By John Hall

Originally published in 1832 by the American Sunday School Union, this is a short biography of one of the most important missionaries of the 19th century. It was written to encourage young people to dedicate their lives to the sacred work of serving the Lord Jesus Christ. Henry Martyn willingly gave up his life for the cause of Christ’s gospel in faraway lands. He spent years in India sharing the Gospel with the people of that land, caring for the poor, and translating the Scriptures into the common tongue. As he journeyed back to England, he spent time in Persia, translating the New Testament into Persian for the first time, laying the foundation for modern missions in that land. The book includes many extracts from Martyn’s own journals and letters, giving a personal glimpse into his godly heart and life. Hardback. 136 pages.

Timeless Christian Classics Series

By Various Authors

The 20th-century marked a time when most institutions in the Western world were de-Christianized. A recognition of God, the fear of God, the Scriptures, the centrality of Christ, and almost all remnants of the Christian faith were carefully expunged from schools, children’s media, and children’s literature like The Swiss Family Robinson and Heidi. Others, that were too overtly Christian were simply shelved and by and large forgotten (examples: The Pilgrim’s Progress and The Holy War by John Bunyan).

But there are still Christian families and churches living in the English-speaking world and they still want to read good Christian books. For the Generations team, we see this as the time to re-Christianize our literature, our school curriculum, and our media for our children.

To that end, we have re-published original children’s classics with the original Christian content – the content that was stripped from 20th-century publication, as well as some of the “forgotten” Christian classics from the past. We’re calling it The Timeless Christian Classics Series.

Here’s what we have re-published so far, with accompanying study guides for 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade levels.

“Good family reading time series. Keeps everyone riveted. Great parallels to man-made religious systems and their failures to know and obey God and how God chooses the foolish things of the world to bring to nothing those that are wise.” —Anon.

Hit List

By Brian G. Hedges

The Christian life is a war and one of your most lethal enemies hangs its helmet inside your heart. This infernal, internal enemy is sin, which even after new birth continues to reside in every believer. As followers of Jesus, we’ve been given a simple mission regarding sin: search and destroy. Put it to death.

But in the words of Cornelius Plantinga Jr., “sin has a thousand faces.” It is one thing to oppose sin in principle, quite another to actually do the bloody work of crucifying specific sin patterns in our lives. Sometimes these patterns aredifficult to detect. Always they fight back, tooth and nail, mounting vehement resistance in counter-maneuvers of a variety and complexity that would sendGeneral Schwarzkopf’s mind spinning like a tilt-a-whirl.

The most famous faces of sin are the Seven Deadly Sins: pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. The deadly sins are the leading undercover operatives for the world, the flesh, and the devil, thatevil complex of powers arrayed against our souls. And while we may recognize these sins by their names, we are often misled by the subtlety of their methods and ways. These sins are masters of disguise, adept at masking their true nature in charades of harmlessness, acceptability, and fun.

In Hit List, Brian Hedges helps us take aim at the seven deadly sins by providing detailed dossiers for each one and equipping us with rich gospel resources for replacing vice with the virtue of Christ.

Thoughts for Young Men

By J.C. Ryle

There are few young men anywhere who seem to think on eternal things. I speak without respect of persons; I say it of all. High or low, rich or poor, gentle or simple, learned or unlearned, in town or in country; it makes no matter. I tremble to observe how few young men are led by the Spirit – how few are in that narrow way which leads to life – how few are setting their affections upon things above – how few are taking up the cross, and following Christ. I say it with all sorrow, but I believe, as in God’s sight, I am saying nothing more than the truth. Young men, you form a large and most important class; and in what condition are your immortal souls? – J.C. Ryle

You Who?

By Rachel Jankovic

If “Who am I?” is the question you’re asking, Rachel Jankovic doesn’t want you to “find yourself” or “follow your heart.”

Those lies are nothing to the confidence, freedom, and clarity of purpose that come with knowing what is actually essential about you. And the answer to that question is at once less and more than what you are hoping for. Christians love the idea that self-expression is the essence of a beautiful person, but that’s a lie, too. With trademark humor and no nonsense practicality, Rachel Jankovic explains the fake story of the Self, starting with the inventions of a supremely ugly man named Sartre (rhymes with “blart”). And we—men and women, young and old–have bought his lie of the Best Self, with terrible results.

Thankfully, that’s not the end of our story, You Who: Why You Matter and How to Deal with It takes the identity question into the nitty gritty details of everyday life. Here’s the first clue: Stop looking inside, and start planting flags of everyday faithfulness. In Christianity, the self is always a tool and never a destination.

Radiant

By Richard Hannula

Radiant records the triumph of the gospel as Christian women faced kings and governors, soldiers and wild beasts, Japanese guards and Muslim raiders, fire, exile, the chopping block, Nazis, cannibals, riots and more. “Look to heaven and forsake the world” has been their cry for two thousand years, but being “spiritually minded” in this way hasn’t made these women ethereal – it’s made them invincible.

From South America to Europe, from China to Africa to the Wild West, in prisons and in throne rooms, the Christian heroines of Radiant have left a stunning legacy. These short and moving biographies for young people introduce fifty often unfamiliar champions of the faith: women like Ida Kahn, who opened the first clinic in a Chinese city of 300,000 people; Lady Anne Hamilton, who rode with the Covenanter cavalry at the decisive Battle of Berwick; and Anngrace Taban, who was forced to type secret battle plans for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army.

Luther in Love

By Doug Bond

Discovering that love and marriage is complex, sacrificial, and yet intensely beautiful, Katharina von Bora, fearful of discovery, secretly pens a private memoir of her apostasy, her forbidden marriage to Martin Luther, his dangerous life and turbulent legacy, their trials and tragedies, and their joys and triumphs.

How does an apostate nun live with an apostate monk, and a monk like Luther? He is a giant in the land: a bold, bombastic, fearless man. Vitriolic to his opponents, given to dark bouts of depression and self-doubt, unwashed, unkempt, plagued by a painful and reoccurring bowel disorder, and nothing short of brilliant.

How does a young woman live with such a man? Katie was only 26 when she married 42 year-old Luther! She had not been around men since she was five years of age. Luther in Love explores all this in the context of the dynamic unfolding story of Luther and the Reformation in Germany, and will focus particular attention on the sanctifying influence of Christian marriage, the school of character. It includes a downloadable study guide for pastors to use in premarital counseling with young couples about to wed.

American Faith

By Kevin Swanson with Joshua Schwisow, Daniel Noor, and Peter Bringe

History should never be boring because when we look at what is going on in the world, we are seeing the very works of God. While there are evil events and God’s judgment visits the nations again and again through the centuries, there are always redemptive events. The kingdom of Jesus Christ emerges here and there, and it is for us to take note of it and praise God for these amazing events.

This unique introduction to American history provides a survey of important events in American history, while digging deep into the real lives of the people who were there. Here you will find 27 vignettes of great American lives, all portraits of American faith. In God’s good providence, He uses men and women of the faith to accomplish remarkable things. America carved out liberties unlike many other nations, thanks to godly men and women. When we see instances of faith in these lives, it is for us to recognize them and point them out to our children. They are examples for us (Romans 15:4, 1 Corinthians 10:6), and we will do well to learn from them.

The 27 vignettes include John Winthrop, William Bradford, Jonathan Edwards, Phillis Wheatley, Patrick Henry, Noah Webster, Daniel Boone, John Quincy Adams, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Elisabeth Elliot, David Wilkerson, and others.

Lambert, who wrote these accounts of pioneering missionaries serving in the greatest century of missions.

By Doug Bond

John Knox, the Thundering Scott, lives a life of adventure and danger in turbulent, corrupt sixteenth-century Scotland. Finding himself a wanted man, Knox is besieged in a castle by French soldiers, seized, and made a galley slave. Discover the fascinating story of a timid man transformed by the grace and power of the gospel into one of the most influential figures in Scottish history.

These are the greatest stories of faith in our age to be appended on the Hebrews 11 list of the heroes of the faith. We have republished this classic compendium of stories from John C. Lambert, who wrote these accounts of pioneering missionaries serving in the greatest century of missions. Every Christian child growing up in Christian homes should know these stories by heart, and every family should pass this record in printed form on to the next generation.
