3 Steps to Help Your Kids Memorize Scripture (and Actually Love It)
Let’s face it—between soccer practice, spelling tests, and snack time, teaching your kids to memorize Scripture can feel like one more impossible task on your already overloaded plate.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
In fact, it shouldn’t be.
Scripture memory isn’t about checking a spiritual box. It’s about forming your children’s hearts and minds with eternal truth—helping them delight in God’s Word and walk in it for life.
That’s why we created Teach Me the Faith, a Scripture memory catechism that equips families with a simple, systematic way to hide God’s Word in their hearts.
Here are 3 steps—straight from the book—to help your kids (and you) memorize Scripture and love doing it:
1. Start with a Question
Each Scripture memory begins with a catechism-style question:
“Who made you?”
“Why did God make you and all things?”
“Where do we learn how to glorify God?”
Questions spark curiosity. They open the door to meaningful conversations. And they help kids engage rather than just repeat.
Tip: Ask the question like you’re launching an adventure—because you are. You’re helping your kids discover eternal truth from the very mouth of God.
2. Read the Answer Out Loud—Clearly and Slowly
Each answer is straight from Scripture. No paraphrase. No fluff. Just the pure Word of God.
For example, the answer to “Who made you?” is:
“Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3)
Reading out loud builds familiarity and reverence. When kids hear the Bible read aloud daily, they begin to love the sound of it—and the God who speaks it.
Tip: Use expression. Let the beauty of the verse come through your voice.
3. Recite and Repeat—As a Family
After reading the verse, have each child try to recite it individually. Gently correct any errors, and then say it all together as a family.
This step transforms memorization from an isolated exercise into a shared experience of discipleship.
Tip: Keep it joyful and encouraging. Celebrate progress, even if it’s slow. Add motions or songs if it helps!
Bonus: Use a Memorization Checklist
The back of Teach Me the Faith includes a simple checklist to help you track your family’s Scripture memory journey. Little victories matter. And seeing progress builds momentum. If you don’t have the book, no worries. You can download a memory tracker for FREE at teachmethefaith.com
Final Word
God commands us to teach His Word diligently to our children—when we sit, when we walk, when we lie down, and when we rise (Deuteronomy 6:6–7).
Teach Me the Faith is more than a book. It’s a tool to help you fulfill that calling with joy, clarity, and purpose.
Let this be the year your kids fall in love with Scripture—one question, one verse, one recitation at a time.
